Surah At-Taubah/ Al-Bara'at: The Repentances/ The Immunity

Revealed in Madinah

9:1

An immunity from Allah and His Rasul in respect of those polytheists with whom you had made a covenant.

9:2
So you go around in the land for four months, and know that you cannot be frustrating Allah, and that Allah will humiliate the Unbelievers.

9:3
And it is a proclamation from Allah and His Rasul to men on the day of the Great Hajj that Allah is immune from obligations with the polytheists, and His Rasul. So if you repent, it is then better for you. But if you return, then know that you cannot become frustrating to Allah. And you give tidings of a painful punishment to those who disbelieve,—

9:4
but as to those of the polytheists with whom you made a covenant, then they did not fail you in anything, and did not back up anyone against you, fulfill then their covenant in their favor up to their term. Surely Allah loves the reverent.

9:5
So when the sacred months have passed, then slay the polytheists wherever you find them, and capture them, and besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every ambush. But if they repent and keep up the Salat and pay the Zakat, then leave them alone on their path. Surely Allah is most Forgiving, most Rewarding.

9:6
And if anyone of the polytheists asks you for refuge, then give him refuge till he hears Allah's word, then dispatch him to his place of safety. This is so because surely they are people who do not know.

9:7
How will there be a covenant of the polytheists with Allah and with His Rasul except those with whom you made a covenant near the Sacred Masjid? Then so long as they stand upright to you, you should also stand upright to them. Surely Allah loves the reverent.

9:8
How? And if they prevail against you, they will not observe with you the ties of relationship nor any agreement. They would please you with their mouths, while their hearts dissent; and most of them are wicked.

9:9
They have bartered for the Messages of Allah a small price, so they keep back from His path. Surely evil are those they go on doing.

9:10
They will not observe with a Believer the ties of relationship nor of agreement. And these are themselves the transgressors.

9:11
But if they repent, and keep up the Salat and pay the Zakat, then they are your brethren in Faith. And We explain the Messages for people who know.

9:12
And if they break their oaths after their covenant, and taunt in your religion, then fight the ringleaders of unbelief; surely as to them, oaths are nothing to them,— so that they may desist.

9:13
Will you not fight a people who have annulled their oaths, and they resolved at the expulsion of the Rasul, and they were the first to start against you? Do you fear them? But Allah has a better right that you should fear Him, if you be Believers.

9:14
Fight them, Allah will punish them by your hands, and He will humiliate them, and He will help you against them, and He will heal the breasts of a believing people.

9:15
And He will take away the anger of their hearts. And Allah will turn towards whom He pleases. And Allah is all-Knowing, most Wise.

9:16
Do you think that you will be left alone before Allah has distinguished those who have struggled from among you, and who have not taken as an intimate friend beside Allah and neither His Rasul and nor the Believers? And Allah is Aware of what you do.

9:17
It is not of the polytheists to maintain the Masjids of Allah bearing witness against themselves of unbelief. These— their deeds go in vain. And in the Fire they will abide.

9:18
Only he maintains the Masjids of Allah who believes in Allah and the Future Day, and who keeps up the Salat and gives the Zakat, and does not fear except Allah; therefore hopefully these will be among the guided ones.

9:19
And do you hold the giving of drinking-water to the pilgrims and the maintenance of the Sacred Masjid equal to one who believes in Allah and the Future day, and struggles in the way of Allah? They are not equals in the sight of Allah. And Allah does not guide the unjust people.

9:20
Those who believe and migrate and struggle in the way of Allah with their wealth and their lives, have the highest rank in the sight of Allah. And these are themselves the winners.
