Surah Al-Fajr: The Dawn

Revealed at Makkah

With the name of Allah, most Gracious, most Rewarding

89:1
CONSIDER the Dawn,

89:2
and the ten nights,

89:3
and the Even, and the Odd,

89:4
and the night when it passes away.

89:5
Is there not in these things an oath for one possessed of understanding?

89:6
Have you not seen how your Rabb dealt with ‘Ad,

89:7
Iram, possessors of lofty structures,

89:8
these— the like of which have not been erected in cities;

89:9
and Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley;

89:10
and Fir‘awn the lord of hosts,—

89:11
who had rebelled in the cities,

89:12
so they increasingly did mischief-making therein?

89:13
Therefore Your Rabb let fall upon them diverse punishment.

89:14
Verily your Rabb is indeed on a watch-tower.

89:15
Moreover as for man, when his Rabb disciplines him thus honors him and favors him, then he says: “My Rabb has honored me.”

89:16
But when He disciplines him and measures out to him his provision, then he says: “My Rabb has disgraced me.”

89:17
No, but you do not honor the orphan,

89:18
nor do you urge on feeding the poor;

89:19
and you devour the heritage an entire devouring;

89:20
and you love wealth with exceeding love.
