Surah Al-Baqarah: The Heifer

Revealed at Madinah

2:41
And believe in that which I have revealed confirming which is with you, and do not become the first to disbelieve in it, and do not exchange My Messages for a meager price; and Me, Me alone then should you revere.

2:42
And do not clothe the Truth with falsehood, nor conceal the Truth, while you were knowing.

2:43
And establish the Salat, and give the Zakat, and bow down with the bowers down.

2:44
Do you command mankind for piety while you yourselves forget, and yet you read the scripture? Don’t you then apply sense?

2:45
And you seek the help with perseverance and Salat. And that indeed is a hard thing except for the humble ones,—

2:46
who think that they are indeed going to meet their Rabb, and that they are certainly returning towards Him.

2:47
O Children of Israil! remember My favor which I bestowed upon you, and that I distinguished you above the nations.

2:48
And guard yourselves against a Day— no soul will avail from another soul aught, nor will any intercession be accepted on its behalf, nor will any compensation be taken from it, nor will they be helped.

2:49
And remember: We rescued you from the people of Fir‘awn, they afflicted you with terrible torment, they slaughtered your sons and let your females live. And in this there was a great trial from your Rabb.

2:50
And remember, We parted the Sea for you, thus We rescued you, and We drowned the people of Fir‘awn while you were looking on.

2:51
And behold! We made an appointment of forty nights with Musa, then you took the calf in his absence, and you were unjust.

2:52
Yet, even after that, We did forgive you, that perhaps you might give thanks.

2:53
And remember,— We gave Musa the scripture, and the Discrimination, that you may follow guidance.

2:54
And behold! Musa said to his people: “O my people! you have indeed wronged your own selves by your taking the calf; so turn to your Creator, and mortify your souls. This is better for you in the sight of your Creator.” Therefore He turned towards you. Surely He, He is the Oft-returning, the most Rewarding.

2:55
And remember,— you said: “O Musa! We shall not believe in you until we see Allah manifestly.” Then the thunderbolt overtook you while you looked on..

2:56
Then We raised you up after your stupor that perhaps you might give thanks.

2:57
And We caused the clouds to overshadow you, and We sent down upon you the manna and the quails: “Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you.” And they did not harm Us, but they rather were doing harm to themselves

2:58
And behold! We said: “Enter this township and eat from it as-and-when you wish— plentifully; but enter the gate submissively; and say: ‘Hittatun’, We may forgive you your wrongs; and We shall immediately increase to the doors of good.”

2:59
But those who were unjust changed this saying, different from what had been said to them; so We sent down upon those who did wrong a pestilence from above, because they had been transgressing.

2:60
And remember,— Musa sought water for his people, so We said: “Strike with your staff the Rock.” So there gushed forth from it twelve springs. Every tribe just knew their drinking places. “Eat and drink out of the provisions of Allah, and do not act corruptly in the earth— being mischief-makers.”
